Additional 20th century sites were also recorded. The 19th century sites are the remains of farm homes occupied during the earlier part of the 19th century and recorded in the 1861 census. The Homestead in the Woods site is thought to have been the family home of a direct descendant of Robert Dickson, one of the first and most prominent Pre-Loyalist protestant settlers of the area. Both the Hilltop Farm site and the Marshside site also appear to be farm homes that were abandoned at the end of the 19th century, quite possibly following the 1869 destruction of important dykes by the Saxby Gale. The 1994 survey identified important historical resouces so they could be avoided during the Park redevelopment and construction. He was the first British subject to set up a land-based trading & fishing post on that coast and his establishment lasted until the late 1770s, when it was destroyed by American privateers. This publication reviews the achievements of George Walker from his seafaring days through his commercial activities in Canada until his untimely death in London, England in 1777. Using the evidence from historical documents and oral histories, this paper details the importance of this locale during the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The role played by Alston Point in the development of the town of Bathurst is explored. Alston Point was a commercial shipping center for fishing and lumbering products but it also served as a place of residence, a 19th century shipbuilding station, a militia training grounds, a bird hunting destination, and as a recreational property.
