The Pre-contact archaeology of the Grand Manan Archipelago : cultural history and regional integrationNew Brunswick Culture and Sport Secretariat, Archaeological Services Fredericton19991-55236-662-6engNew Brunswick Manuscripts in Archaeology29ArchaeologyNoKOERNER LIBRARY microforms (Floor 2) MICROLOG 101-01780xiii, 154 p.The purpose of this thesis is to compile all available data about the prehistoric archaeology of the Grand Manan archipelago, to use these data to construct a framework for prehistoric cultural history, to evaluate existing interpretations about Grand Manan prehistory, and to integrate these into a larger regional perspective. After an introduction on archaeological research in the area, chapter 2 presents background on the archipelago's geology and biogeography, previous archaeological research, and ethnohistory. Chapter 3 describes research methods used, analyzes existing artifact collections, and surveys previously unrecorded archaeological sites & previous excavations. Chapter 4 describes two sites partially excavated during this research along with their contents and some of the spatial & temporal patterns discernible within them. In chapter 5, information from the previous two chapters is integrated into a cultural history, and the structure & contents of the two sites of chapter 4 are compared to those of sites excavated elsewhere. The integration of these results into a regional framework leads to a discussion of interpretations about regional exchange networks and the nature of the participation by Grand Manan Native people.New Brunswick archaeology / New Brunswick.
