The Partridge Island site: Early and Middle Woodland-related assemblages in Passamaquoddy Bay

Partridge Island is a small island forming part of the Campobello-Deer Island archipelago in Passamaquoddy Bay, New Brunswick. This report describes & analyzes archaeological material excavated at the Partridge Island shell midden site. It begins with an overview of the Island environment & archaeology, then analyzes archaeological data including stratigraphy, cultural features & their distribution, bone & antler artefacts, ceramic artefacts, lithic artefacts, faunal remains, and radiocarbon dates. The prehistory & chronology of the Island and Bay are discussed with reference to the archaeological investigation and previous research. Variability in assemblages found at the Island and at mainland sites is also examined. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding periods of site utilization and directions for future research are suggested.
