The Story of Percival Pup
Publication Details
Percival is a dog without owner or pedigree, living by the docks in the Poortown neighbourhood of Big City. He is taken in by a butcher and his wife who clean him up, care for him, and enter him in a dog show, where he wins the prize for best Toy Pomeranian. In the process, Percival discovers his origin story and pedigree.
Intended for early readers, the story was written by Moncton physician Arthur Ross. It first appeared in serialized form seventeen years earlier in the Moncton Transcript beginning November 1948. Ross considered writing for children a hobby, and when the story first appeared it was under the pen name A. Wylie. Ross's writing is engaging and well-paced, and his use of generalized language for places and professions lends the story a universal appeal.
