The year next, she was a professor at the Université de Moncton. She published her first novel titled Pointe-aux-Coques in 1958. In 1970 she obtained her doctorate in Letters from Laval University and in 1971 wrote her radio play La Sagouine. She has received more than fifteen literary prizes including the prestigious Prix Goncourt (1979) for her novel Pélagie-la-Charrette and thirty honorary doctorates.
