Alice Van Wart
1948-
Alice Van Wart was born in New Brunswick in 1948. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) and a Master of Arts degree (MA) from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton. She completed a Ph.D. degree at the University of Alberta. At one time, she was editorial assistant with Fiddlehead Poetry Books (Fredericton). She worked as a journalist and broadcaster and was co-editor of a feminist newspaper. In addition, she taught English literature, at the University of Alberta, beginning in 1979, and, later, she taught literature and writing in the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Toronto. Van Wart has published two books of poetry, including Positionings (Fredericton: Goose Lane, 1980) and has written articles on modern and contemporary literature. She edited the journals of Canadian poet and novelist, Elizabeth Smart (1913-1986) which were published, by Deneau Publishers, in 1986, under the title, Necessary Secrets: The Journals of Elizabeth Smart. Later she published Juvenilia: Early Writings of Elizabeth Smart (Toronto: Coach House Press, 1987); and On the Side of the Angels: The Second Volume of the Journals of Elizabeth Smart (London: HarperCollins, 1994).

Scope and Content NoteThe Alice Van Wart fonds consists primarily of correspondence between Alice and Fred Cogswell, Lorna Crozier and Patrick Lane. Alice was long time friends with Fred, Lorna and Patrick and the letters she received from them include personal details about their lives and many poems. There are also photos of Alice, Fred, Lorna and Patrick together as well as a few miscellaneous records.
