Birchbark Canoes, Dugouts, and Gouges: Is There Any Logical Relationship?

While archaeologists have often inferred that ground stone tools were used in Archaic period to constrict dugout canoes, this paper reviews cross-cultural data to argue that such a connection is tenuous: processes such as burning can permit the construction of dugout canoes using much lighter tools.
