Ethnicity on the Maritime Peninsula, 1600-1759

Interpreting Indigenous ethnic territories prior to European contact is challenging. This paper uses early 17th-century French accounts to suggest that Wabanaki groups prior to contact  were not organized around river drainages, and that such an impression was a result of 17th- and 18th-century political disruption.
