Description

This legislation was enacted in 2010, replacing the Historic Sites Protections Ace (1973), and is the current statute governing the protection and preservation of New Brunswick's cultural heritage. As well as making changes to the ownership of certain artifacts, the updated legislation redefined key terminology, established a permitting system for paleontological assessment and "amateur" archaeologists, enabled the minister to impose the terms and conditions on a permit that he or she considers appropriate, increased the penalties for offense or violations ($240 to $200,000, 90 days' to 18 months' imprisonment), established the requirement for Site Alterations Permits, and enabled the minister to appoints inspectors to enforce the act.
