Maritime Woodland Period Dwelling Surface Construction on the Coast of the Maritime Peninsula: Implications for Site Reuse and Intra-Site Space

Rather than being intentionally excavated by their inhabitants to create semi-subterranean wigwam floors, Maritime Woodland period Indigenous people created surfaces that became inadvertently depressed due to reuse as part of a seasonal round. Floor treatments, such as lining surfaces with gravel, may have served to counter floors becoming too depressed and may have served as a landmark for future people using a site to know where to place their wigwams.
