Description

When the large mixed-use Market Square development opened on Saint John’s waterfront in 1983, it was considered the focal point for the city’s cultural activities, shopping, tourism, and entertainment. While the vibrancy of the project as a civic epicenter has subsided, its combination of interior atrium space and incorporation of historic structures was groundbreaking for New Brunswick. The architectural team entrusted with the project was composed of Montreal’s ARCOP and Saint John’s Mott, Myles & Chatwin. This article gives a thorough account of the project design.
