Description

In early to mid-19th century Britain, a return to medieval Gothic church architecture and liturgy was influenced by the formation of the Cambridge Camden Society, a group of Anglican clerics and laypersons interested in ecclesiology or the "science" of church architecture. The group published a periodical called The Ecclesiologist, which had a great influence on the early adoption of the pure "ecclesiological" Gothic Revival style in British North America. The influence was particularly felt in Fredericton, where Bishop John Medley and his architect Frank Wills saw moral and aesthetic value in following the society's principles, as evidence in their designs for St. Anne's Parish Church and Christ Church Cathedral.
