Description

This paper examines the way in which the federal government planned its correctional facilities, from the opening of the Kingston Penitentiary in 1835 to a series of medium-security facilities in 1950. Dorchester Penitentiary (1879) is studied and represented by period plans and elevations, alongside other federal prisons across the country.
