Eberhard Zeidler: In Search of Human Space

One of Canada's most successful postwar architects, Zeidler and his firm were given the mammoth commission in the early 1970s of designing new hospitals for New Brunswick's three largest cities: Saint John, Fredericton, and Moncton. All three designs were based on his pioneering 'interstitial floor' system developed at McMaster University, where the services and systems are on separate levels from the patient care floors. Zeidler's work is interpreted chronologically, and placed in the context of contemporary architectural development. The book concludes with an essay by Zeidler on his philosophy of architecture. The Saint John Regional Hospital is presented through photographs and a cross-section drawing.
