A Gift for Benjamin: A One-Act Play for Children
Publication Details
This one-act play provides an account of the Nativity, in which a young shepherd boy asks the Christ child to save his dog from a fatal illness. All characters in the play are transformed by bearing witness to the divine birth, and the boy is reunited with his dog whose health has been restored in a first Christmas miracle. The book is prefaced by a dedication page that reads simply, "For the Kindness Club."
In December 1961, the book was advertised in the Daily Gleaner at thirty-five cents. The play was produced that same year by the Kindness Club and premiered with performances at Devon School and Wilmot Church in Fredericton, and via radio broadcast on CJCJ Woodstock. Productions were still being reported in the "Kindness Club Notes" section of the Gleaner until 1970, including a 1967 performance by an Australian chapter.
