John Raymond Hamilton
1847-1922

John Raymond Hamilton was born at Sandy Hill, New York on 10 April 1847. Hamilton enlisted as a Private in the Civil War at the age of 15. He served with the New York Infantry, Regiment 123rd Company B and was injured in battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863, age 16. He eventually moved to Saint John, New Brunswick, and married Hannah Elizabeth Burns in 1876. He was a news agent for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, and an advertising agent.  He wrote travel guides for the area, including New Brunswick and its Scenery: A Tourist's and Angler's Guide to the Province of New Brunswick (1874); The Eastern provinces: railroads, steamboats, and stage lines: a travellers' guide to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island (1883); Saint John and the province of New Brunswick: a handbook for travellers, tourists and business men (1883 and 1884). He died in Bath, Steuben County, New York 31 January 1922.
