Henry Alline
1748-1784
Henry Alline was born on 14 June 1748 in Newport, Rhode Island. When he was 11, his family moved to the township of Falmouth in Nova Scotia. With no theological training, he became an itinerant preacher in April 1776. Until his death in 1784, he preached throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, working to establish independent churches, which were the first steps in what led to the Baptist movement in the Maritimes. Between 1780 and his death in January 1784, he produced two theological works (Two Mites (1781) and The Anti-Traditionalist (1783)), three sermons, two volumes of religious verse, and a detailed travel journal. In the 1790s, many of his works were printed and used by the Free Will Baptists in New England. His Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1786) was a collection of over 480 hymns. He was going to Boston to publish it but died of consumption in New Hampshire in 1784.
