Marguerite Maillet
1924-

Born in 1924, and originally from Saint-Norbert, New Brunswick, Marguerite Maillet studied and taught in New Brunswick. After obtaining her doctorate in French literature at the University of Ottawa, she pursued her teaching career and her research in Acadian literature at the Université de Moncton from 1973 to 1987. She held the position of Chair of acadian studies until her retirement from the university in 1990. Marguerite Maillet has published, among other notable works, History of Acadian Literature: From Dream to Dream in 1983 and an Anthology of Acadian Literary Texts in 1979 (in collaboration). She is also the author of several articles that have appeared in newspapers and magazines, and she has given numerous lectures on Acadia and its literature in Canada, the United States and Europe. After her retirement, she published Bibliographie des publications des provinces Maritimes de 1609 à 1995 and, in 1996, she founded Bouton d’or Acadie, a children’s literature publishing house. In 2002, Her Excellency the Governor General appointed her to the rank of Officer of the Order of Canada; in 2006, she became a member of the Order of Francophones of America; and in 2007, the Société Nationale de l'Acadie awarded her its highest honour, the Léger-Comeau Medal.
