Rev. Alexander Rae Garvie
1839-1874

Rev. Alexander Rae Garvie was born at Demerara, British Guiana on 6 Jan 1839.  The family settled in Halifax in the 1850s. Garvie entered the Presbyterian College in Halifax to study for the ministry. He graduated in 1866 and was ordained and inducted at St John's Church, Chatham, in 1868. Two years later he resigned due to illness.  In 1871 he was inducted as minister of the Presbyterian church at Windsor, N.S., but he had to resign again within two years. He died in Montreal on 5 Mar 1874. He is buried at the St. Luke’s Methodist St. John’s Presbyterian Cemetery in Chatham, NB. His book of verse, Thistledown, was published posthumously in 1875.
