In 1962, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Montreal. Maillet then returned to Collège Notre-Dame d’Acadie to teach there from 1964 to 1965. The year next, she was a professor at the Université de Moncton. She published her first novel titled Pointe-aux-Coques in 1958. In 1970 she obtained her doctorate in Letters from Laval University and in 1971 wrote her radio play La Sagouine. She has received more than fifteen literary prizes including the prestigious Prix Goncourt (1979) for her novel Pélagie-la-Charrette and thirty honorary doctorates. Maillet is Companion of the Order of Canada, member of the Royal Society of Canada and Officer of the Order of the Legion of Honor of France, among others.
