Louis Haché

1924-2020

Louis Haché was born 3 May 1924 in Saint-Isidore, NB and grew up on Miscou Island. He attended Collège de Bathurst and Collège de Memramcook where he obtained a Bachelor of Education in 1951.  He obtained a Master's in French Studies from Université de Laval in 1959. He became a professor at the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton, then at the Université de Moncton. He then worked as a translator at the New Brunswick Translation Bureau in 1973, retiring in 1984. He lived in Moncton from 1991 until his death on 22 April 2020. His first five novels, published by Éditions d'Acadie, were set on the islands of Lamèque and Miscou. Books he has written include Charmanted Miscou in 1973, Adieu P'tit Chipagan (1978) and De Tracadie à Tilley Road (2009). From 1996 to 2003, Haché wrote La Tracadienne, Le Desservant de Charnissey, and La Maîtresse d'école, the first Acadian trilogy.  He won the following prizes: Plume d’Or (2008), Prix Champlain (2004), Prix France-Acadie (1979) and the Prix L’Acadie entre les lignes from Radio-Canada.
