Colonel George Francis Gillman Stanley
1907-2002
Colonel George Francis Gillman Stanley was born in Calgary in 1907 and educated at the University of Alberta and Oxford. He taught history at Mount Allison University, New Brunswick, the University of British Columbia and the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1953. As Director of Canadian Studies at Mount Allison University, he was called upon to sit on the Academic Planning Commission of the Université de Moncton in 1969. In 1978, he became general editor of a series of volumes comprising all the known writings of the Métis leader, Louis Riel. In 1982, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. Stanley is the author of the following books: The Birth of Western Canada: A History of the Riel Rebellions, 1936 (1960); Canada's Soldiers, 1604-1954: The Military History of an Unmilitary People (1954); In the Face of Danger: The History of the Lake Superior Regiment (1960); A biography of Louis Riel (1963); New France The Last Phase, 1774-1760 (1968) and Canada Invaded: 1775-1776 (1973). He died in 2002, and was buried with full military honours in Sackville, NB.

Scope and Content NoteThe fonds includes administrative records, memoirs, evaluation committee reports and a report from the Academic Planning Commission of the Université de Moncton. It contains reports, correspondence, memoirs, speeches and articles concerning the Riel Project. Also found in the fonds is a photograph of an aerial view of the campus of the Université de Moncton (NB).
