Francis Partridge
1846-1907

Francis Partridge was born in Dursley, Gloucestershire, UK in 1846.  He was educated at Katharine Lady Berkeley's School and St Augustine's College, Canterbury and emigrated to Canada in 1868 to become Headmaster of the Grammar School at St. Andrews, New Brunswick, a post he held until 1872. He was Rector of Rothesay, NBfrom 1872 until 1879 when he was appointed a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton. He was Rector of St George's, Halifax, Nova Scotia from 1881 until 1895, also holding the position of Lecturer in Apologetics at the University of King's College beginning in 1886. In 1895 he became the first Dean of Fredericton. The Partridge family was the subject of a fictionalized biographical series, including Chaplet of Grace and The Penningtons written by his son Basil.  Works by Francis Partridge include: The apostolic origin of the Church of England: a sermon, preached in Trinity Church, St. John, N.B., on the anniversary of the Diocesan Church Society, July 2d, 1874; Strength and peace: a sermon preached before the Diocesan Synod of Nova Scotia, in St. Luke's Cathedral, Halifax, June 22 1894; and, Progress of the Church of England in seven rural deaneries: addresses at the last anniversary meeting of the Diocesan Church Society of New Brunswick. Also, Sermon by the Very Rev. Dean Partridge, at anniversary service in the cathedral, October 5th, 1897;  and Progress of the Church of England in the seven rural deaneries (1897). He also wrote a poem entitled “Neith” for Volume 3 of Neith Magazine (July 1903).  Partridge was awarded a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) by UNB at the 1900 Fredericton Encaenia. Partridge died 18 Apr 1906 in Fredericton and was buried in Saint Peter's Anglican Church Cemetery, Springhill, York County, NB.
