Peter Fisher
1782-1848

Peter Fisher (blacksmith, merchant and historian) was born 9 June 1782 on Staten Island, New York. Fisher’s family moved to New Brunswick when he was sixteen months old, and they settled at St. Anne’s Point (renamed Fredericton). Fisher received his education from Bealing Stephens Williams. He wrote two histories of New Brunswick:  Sketches of New Brunswick: Containing an Account of the First Settlement of the Province, With a Brief Description of the Country, Climate, Productions, Inhabitants, Government, Rivers, Towns, Settlements, Public Institutions, Trade, Revenue, Population, &c., by an Inhabitant of the Province (1825) and Notitia of New-Brunswick for 1836 and Extending Into 1837: Comprising Historical, Geographical, Statistical and Commercial Notices of the Province (1838). Fisher died 15 August 1848.

    Scope and Content Note

    This document includes a brief genealogy of Loyalist, Lewis Fisher's immediate family through 2 generations. It also contains a brief account of the Fisher family's arrival in New Brunswick, at the end of the American Revolutionary War, beginning with the family's landing at Saint John and subsequent travel up the St. John River to Fredericton via Oromocto. There is also a short description of the hardships the Fishers and other Loyalist families faced, during the winter of 1783-1784, while camped in tents on the banks of the St. John River at Salamanca, in what is now Fredericton.
