Description

Prior to the 1780's, Catholics in what are now Canada's Maritime provinces were few in number, mostly Acadians and Indians, and received direction from the diocese of Quebec. Beginning in the 1780's, however, the Catholic population grew rapidly, with the arrival of many Irish and Scottish immigrants. An Irish Catholic middle class developed in Halifax and led the struggle for change. By 1830, the Catholic community had secured full political rights, and was governed by its own bishops.
