Description

Chronicles the pastorates of Henry A. S. Hartley and J. Francis Robinson in Nova Scotia during 1888-99 as examples of the difficulties in establishing leadership in the black churches there, primarily due to economic conditions, changes in church structure, and personal attributes. Hartley had congregations in Saint John and Amherst for the African Methodist Episcopal Church; he created ill will by inflating his qualifications but accomplished much in setting up strong voluntary associations and stressing the value of education. Robinson headed the Cornwallis Baptist Church in Halifax and, while effective at fund-raising, failed to honor financial arrangements made with his congregation.
