"Pilkington Bourse d'étude 1967 Travelling Scholarship"
Publication Details
Saint John-Rothesay native Lewis Morse was a senior student at the University of Manitoba's School of Architecture when he won the prestigious 1967 Pilkington Travelling Scholarship. Morse's thesis project (depicted in the article) was a megastructure whose purpose was "to bring together in one multi-purpose structure on the Saint John waterfront various transportation systems, warehousing, handling and marketing facilities for the region, showrooms, manufacturing space, office space, a small naval establishment, and recreational facilities for seamen and longshoremen." Some housing was provided nearby. Morse soon became celebrated for his design of Centennial Hall, a 1972 megastructure at the University of Winnipeg, which drew worldwide attention as a revolutionary academic building. It is considered one of the finest examples of late modernism in Canadian architecture.
