Historic Sites Protection Act

New Brunswick's first provincial statute governing the protection of cultural heritage. This legislation defined anthropological objects, historic sites, and permits, and established the framework for a permitting system for professional archaeological assessments in the province. It established fines for the "diminution" of any protected sites, with fines ranging from $240 to $5,200 for violations. An advisory board consisting of representatives of the NB Museum, provincial government, county historical societies, and the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board was appointed by the lieutenant-governor to provide oversight of the act. This statute was repealed in 2010 and replaced with the Heritage Conservation Act.
