Born and raised in Harvey, Albert County, James, Merritt, and Watson Reid moved to the United States as young men in the late 1800s and quickly became among the most important and successful architects in California. The works of their firm (Reid & Reid) include the famous Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, and a number of landmark buildings in San Francisco, including the Call Building skyscraper and the Hill House.
